about

As the son of the two composers featured in this album, I hold this music very close to my heart. It was never a question for me growing up whether I wanted to build a career in music, and it has never been a question whether or not I would play these pieces. They are a part of me.

Each piece belongs to a different period of my life – of my childhood in Alabama, of the year we lived at the American Academy in Rome, of moving to Miami, the city where both of my parents grew up as well, of returning home after my first semester of studies in Switzerland amid the coronavirus pandemic – and each piece holds specific memories for me, many too personal to share here. And yet none of the pieces were written expressly for me. Each one was written for and premiered by another pianist, some before I was born, or before my parents had even met. They represent lifetimes of shared music-making.

The title “Tessellate” refers both to how the pieces evolve – through small impulses which are repeated and transformed, creating a kaleidoscopic texture of sound – and to the way music itself is transmitted between people, from musician to listener, from teacher to pupil, or in this case from parent to child, always slightly changing in the process, like individual tiles in a vibrant mosaic which spans continents and generations.

Special thanks to Santiago Villar Martín of Musician’s Eye Basel for his gracious help recording these works and making this album possible.
